Kinja'd!!!

Riding the TDM in to work today and it cut out on me not long into the ride. I think the battery is shot as it won’t turn over despite being full of gas. PO sent a spare with it so I’m guessing he knew it was old or weak. Waiting on a tow now. How’s your morning going, Oppo?

Update! First tow truck showed up and the guy had never towed a bike so they sent out the next one. Took about three hours all said and done. Got the bike off the truck, he sees the pinched throttle grip and just kinda shrugged and got in the truck and drove off. Not the end of the world but I’m a bit salty today so yeah, I’m calling out that little buttmunch. Company did apologize and waived the pi ckup fee and just made me pay for mileage which was about 20$. So not the end of the world, if I’m honest. But still, thanks buttmunch. Real A+ effort all around -_-

I’m about to go do a presentation to a bunch of fourth grade students (my mum asked for me to come in). Which means I have to drive through Toronto.

Sucks about the bike, though. Hopefully it’s an easy fix.

Dead birds, dead batteries, maybe bike commuting is not for you

I hope so too. If it's just the battery I'm good but I hope I don't need to replace the alternator too. Or stator or whatever it's called on a bike.

The dead bird problem solved itself. Also this is the TDM, not the KLR. KLR is a tank and starts in the spring on the first try after sitting all winter without a battery tender.

Did you give bump starting it a try?

stator, and they really arent that bad to do. pull engine cover, undo stator, replace, re do cover.

the most annoying part is to find the plug

It won’t stay running, that’s the problem . A nd the lights were acting up. If it isn’t the battery, I’m going to hazard a guess it’s electrical in nature.

Sounds like it’s likely a bad stator.

Yeah, looks like an easy enough job. Unfortunately we’re about to get dumped on with rain so I don’t know if I’ll get to check it before the weekend. Upside is the yamaha place actually has one and allows for a full refund if it’s still in the box. Might swing by and grab it next time I’m in the area (though I doubt many people are chasing after TDM parts ) Found the guide to test if the stator is actually bad or not. That’s easy to do as well.

Yeah, just looked up the guide to test for stator health. Apparently 20 years/100k kilometers is the average life span. Bike hasn’t done 100k but it’s probably the original.

stator test is STUPID easy

>turn bike on (charge the battery in your case to get it to run)
>hold a volt mketer against the battery:

A: if stator is done, it will read ~ 12V at idle, ~ 13V at like 3000RPM
B: if rectifier done, it will read likly 14V at idle, and 15+ while running

bike SHOUDL run like 13.4 at idle and 14 ish running.

Ive debated mounting a volt meter in ALL of my bikes just to keep an eye on it and so i can shut a motor down/not take it out should things start to go hay-wire

The one I saw looked even easier as it involved just a voltimeter and a very easily accessed connection under the seat. But I will probably do both. Might as well, if I’m there.
